Snafu - Snafu (1974) / Situation Normal (1974)

Snafu was formed in 1973 by former Procol Harum and Freedom vocalist Bobby Harrison along with Mick Moody, formerly of Tramline, the Mike Cotton Sound and Juicy Lucy. With Colin Gibson from Ginger Baker's Air Force, Terry Popple from Mickey Jupp's Legend, and session musician Pete Solley, the band released two critically acclaimed albums for the WWA label in 1974, Snafu and Situation Normal. In 1975, Solley left the band to be replaced by another session musician, Brian Chatton, and Tim Hinkley was recruited to complete the lineup that would record the band's third album, All Funked Up. This album has been seen as the band's "great lost album" because of its limited vinyl-format release, originally on the Capitol label. Shortly after the release of this album in 1976, Snafu broke up.

Samuel Prody - Samuel Prody (1970)

Ugly Custard - Ugly Custard (1971)

Banda instrumental de Hard Rock do Reino Unido composta por Clem Cattini (Bateria), Roger Coulham (Teclados), Herbie Flowers (Baixo) e Alan Parker (Guitarra). O destaque vai pra 'Babe I'm gonna leave you' numa versão prima, pra não falar em irmã gemea, do Led Zeppelin.
Maiores informações em inglês:
Ugly Custard (Kaleidoscope KAL 100) 1971. This is an impressive crew of studio/session musicians, embarking on what could have been the umpteenth boring exploitation album. Luckily, it turns out to be surprisingly good. Side one of this all-instrumental LP is made up of covers of songs like "Scarboro' Fair", "My Babe" and Stephen Stills' "Hung Upside Down", while side two comprises Parker originals. Strangely enough, side one is actually better, pairing imaginative arranging with expert playing. Not as good or disturbing as the similarly-inclined Blue Phantom on the same label, this is nonetheless listenable, though nothing very special. Alan Parker was also involved in Blue Mink and Hungry Wolf and made a solo album in 1970 too.

Heavy Balloon - 32,000 (1969)

The Comfortable Chair - The Comfortable Chair (1968)

What little attention 1969's "The Comfortable Chair" has gotten seems to stem from the fact The Doors' Jim Morrison discovered them, while John Densmore and Robbie Kreiger served as producers for their sole 1969 album. That's unfortunate since this set is actually quite impressive in its own right. Featuring all-original songs (virtually every band member contributing to he writing chores), the album bounces all over the musical spectrum. Lead singers Bernie Schwartz and Barbara Wallace are both quite good, navigating through the different genres without any trouble. Highlights include the opening rocker 'Ain't No Good No More', the sweet ballad 'I'll See You' and ''Let Me Through. Exemplified by 'Some Soon, Some Day' and 'Stars In Heaven' much of the set features a lazy, dreamy aura that's quite captivating. Had it been a little more original and the band churned out a couple more rock numbers, and the album could have been a classic. As is, the album makes for a fascinating game of 'spot theinfluence'. My ears hear bits of David LaFlamme and It's a Beautiful Day (luckily without the violins) and even The Jefferson Airplane ('Be Me'). Ode also tapped the album for a pair of instantly obscure singles.

A Foot In Coldwater - All Around Us (1974)

In 1971 Alex Machin and Paul Naumann of the Toronto band Leather were struggling along with a new act called Island (which also included Ed Clemens and future Zon member Kim Hunt). The members of Nucleus heard about Machin and Naumann, auditioned them at their farm in Pickering and soon the new five-piece were searching for a record deal. They soon signed with Frank Davies' Daffodil Records who rechristened the group A Foot In Coldwater -- which is an old English term meaning 'bad luck'. They recorded their self-titled debut in 1972 and the band's first single "(Make Me Do) Anything You Want" reached the Canadian charts as Top-25.
Later came other moderately successful singles such as "Isn't Love Unkind (In My Life)", and "Love Is Coming" which were both released in 1972 and would end up on the band's sophomore release 'The Second Foot In Coldwater' LP in 1973.

The disappointment in what should have been initial success was re-thought and the band proceeded with a third album, 1974's 'All Around Us', which was padded with their three charting singles -- "Isn't Love Unkind (In My Life)", "Love Is Coming" and a shortened version of "(Make Me Do) Anything You Want". The latter tune being re-issued as a single and climbing, this time, to Canada's Top-10.
Despite the revived success of the band, Daffodil was in financial trouble and AFIC only managed one more single, "Midnight Lady" b/w "All Around Us", in 1975 before Daffodil went bankrupt and the band were searching for a new label. It would be nearly a year of internal band turmoil (resulting in Bob Horne's departure in the summer of 1976) before A Foot In Coldwater would land back on deck again. Rush's Anthem label grabbed the new four-piece unit for the Paul Naumann produced 'Breaking Through' LP in 1977.

A single release of the title track did nothing as Anthem focused on its marquee act, Rush, and the band soon folded.
The band reunited in 1988 for a southern Ontario tour, featuring Taylor, Machin, Naumann, and Leggat. They took a break in the fall of that year but continued doing short tours thereafter with keyboardist Rick Lamb (ex-Hellfield) who unfortunately died of cancer in 2004; singer Alex Machin became the new lead vocalist for fellow classic rock act Moxy; the Leggat Brothers now play in a new act called The Mississippi Hippies.
Check out this exceptional album from 1974, "All Around Us", featuring the truncated remake of "Make Me Do (Anything You Want)". This is pure Canadian gold.

Marcus - Marcus (1978)

Marcus" (United Artists, 1976) - Possibly one of the most obscure, yet incredible metal releases ever was the 1976 debut and solitary LP by Detroit's MARCUS. The packaging of the LP is very deceptive and this, plus The fact that it received little promotion were probably the chief reasons is so sparsely known. With a cover featuring lead singer Marcus Malone decked out in a Rick James-type outfit, coupled with a release during the formation of the disco era, it was no wonder that this platter often ended up filed in record stores' "soul or r&b" sections! However, the careful metal conessieur, upon looking at the back of the jacket, can spy a couple things that make him/her take note. The first eye-opener is the band's line-up: it featured 3 lead guitarists, Gene Bloch, Randall David and Jack Weber. Not many disco or soul bands feature triple axeters, now do they!? Secondly, a sharp metaller would instantly recognize the bass player on most cuts, Tim Bogert (a veteran of countless heavy units like Cactus, Vanilla Fudge & others). MARCUS' drummer was Dandy "Star" Holmes, later to be involved in more dance-oriented material. With all of this, though, even the most astute hard rock fanatic would have no idea of how monumental the record is that awaits within this subtle cover!Opening with a mellow keyboard intro, MARCUS erupts into Side One and "Black Magic." Using a riff similar to Purple's "Space Truckin'" but in no way a copy, it's immediate to the listener that they have a powerhouse on their hands! Bloch, David and Weber all stay close enough to the main rhythm to be tight, but each layer casual licks and fills over the other to become the ultimate 3-way attack team. Malone's vocals are some of the most unique ever, calling to mind a great combination of Steven Tyler and old Glen Hughes. What a song, but it's just the beginning.Next up is "Salmon Ball," with it's heavy, funk-laden rhythm and blatantly sexual lyrics, uttered in a leering yet controlled tone by Marcus M. This 6 1/2 minute epic gradually builds until it turns into an all-out full-speed guitar assault, making any of the well-known guitar classics look like child's play! Side One continues briefly with the mellow "Kelly," highlighting Malone's emotional vocal prowess before concluding with the devastating 7 minute "Gypsy Fever." Again, funk influenced, but this time with a decided early Priest-ish feel as well, this chunk of metallic class sizzles with power. The main guitar solo is very reminiscent of Gary Moore.Moving to Side Two, the captivated listener can only wonder what will be next! The answer to their question is "Pillow Stars," yet another 6 minute epic filled with complicated rhythms, incredible 3-part guitar sections and dazzling vocals. Perhaps the strangest thing about this cut is that it's opening is quite similar to that of Boston's"Foreplay/Long Time," but far more complex and way better.
Continuing the side is "High School Babies," a straight-ahead, heavy funk scorcher calling to mind the best days of Aerosmith. Malone's gritty vocals are perfect and the guitar interplay between Bloch, David and Weber is masterful. With "Dream Wheel," the band explores their mellower side, once again. An example of stellar songwriting ability, this cut could've garnered considerable airplay with proper promotion, yet it remains heavy enough to fit the album's flow. What in the hell was United Artists doing as a label??!?!! Sleeping at the switch on this one, that's for sure! You can talk about classic songs for hours, but very few you'll mention are in the league with the work of art that concludes this brilliant LP. Clocking in at just under 7 minutes, "Rise Unto Falcon" is simply one of the most beautiful and haunting, yet totally heavy metal songs ever committed to vinyl. Opening with a gentle acoustic section, it is a vehicle for Malone's vocals which are, at once, drainingly emotional and heroically powerful. The patterned guitar solos which drift in and out here are very reminiscent of Glenn Tipton on Priest's "Dreamer Deceiver." Then, the song begins to escalate and eventually reaches a climatic crescendo of such majestic scope that it is nearly classical in nature. The guitar work here is so intricate, heavy and perfectly done that it's guaranteed to give the most icy-veined cynic goose bumps. Incredible!!!!I can't say enough about MARCUS' only LP, except if you don't have it, you must. This album is quite difficult to find, but it's one that EVERY metal and hard rock fan should go to the ends of the earth in search of (review by Ray Dorsey from www.marcusmalone.com).

S.R.C. (Scott Richardson Case) - Milestones (1969)

Originalmente chamavam-se 'Ravins and then the Fugitives' e foi criada pelos guitarristas Steve Lyman e Gary Quackenbush. In the hall of the mountain king - Bolero'. Acompanham os dois acima citados: Al Wilmot - Baixo e Vocal;Glenn Quackenbush - Hammond;E.G. Clawson - Bateria e Scott Richardson - Vocalista.

Savage Grace - Savage Grace (1970) & 2 (1971)

Savage Grace was Detroit's classic rock and progressive band of the late 1960s. With chops galore and a background rooted in jazz and R&B (with some good old fashioned Detroit rock'n'roll thrown in for good measure), Savage Grace stood out from the rest of the Michigan bands as something special and as something quite eclectic. With Guitarist Ron Koss, keyboardist John Seanor, and drummer Larry Zack as the nucleus of a jazzy trio called Scarlet Letter (with two albums on Mainstream), the addition of vocalist/bassist Al Jacquez transformed the group into Savage Grace.

The band was soon signed to Reprise and released their eponymous debut album in 1969. Upon moving to Los Angeles the following year, the group embarked on a second album, which took almost two years to complete. By 1972, the trail had ended and the group went their separate ways. Savage Grace never achieved the success that seemed like their due; certainly their musicianship was top notch and their songwriting was good enough, but in the long run, was also perhaps a bit too eclectic to find a mainstream audience.

In 1998 Reprise Records reissue both original albums on this late-'60s Detroit band. Savage Grace was jazzy, light, tuneful, heavy, and brash -- sometimes all at once -- and mavens of progressive rock will find much here to love. Solid playing, especially from guitarist Ron Koss, and strong vocals from bassist Al Jacquez make this one a true hidden classic. Produced by Joe Wissert (Lovin' Spoonful, Flo & Eddie), the first album contains an excellent version of All Along The Watchtower and an interesting cover of Hymn To Freedom (an Oscar Peterson theme). The remaining songs were written by Ron Koss and Dear Lenore, Night Of The Hunter and Turn Your Head in particular, feature oriental percussion and interesting rhythms. Bernie Krause from Beaver and Krause also assisted on moog.Savage Grace 2 opens with Mother's Son, a Hendrix inspired song and is more hard rock than psychedelic. Both albums contain fine musicianship from John Seanor and Ron Koss, who later combined their talents on the album Seanor And Koss (Reprise 2091) 1972, in particular.

Drama - Drama (1972)

Ton "Shell" Schellekens (Bateria), Polle Eduard(Baixo guitarra, violão, vocal, Uly Grun(Órgão Hammond, Mellotron, Guitarra, vocal), Frank van der Kloot(Guitarra, vocals). Abaixo seguem maiores informações em inglês:

hard rock group featuring a number of dyed-in-the-wool musicians: Shel Schellekens (drums, ex-Big Wheel), the young Frank van der Kloot (guitar, ex-Bobby's Children), Ulli Grün (organ, ex-After Tea, left Drama in 1972) and leader Polle Eduard (ex-After Tea, Steptrack), who put this band together following the breakup of After Tea; Drama mainly featured his vocals and compositions. The single 'Mary's Mama' did not fit into their repertoire, but it turned out to be a mega hit for them.

Drama existed from 1971 till 1973. Frank founded Fontessa and took Shel with him, while Polle went solo. For more than a year now people have been talking and writing about the group Drama. The band comprised a number of individuals who had already made their marks in the past in several different bands: Polle Eduard (Tee Set, After Tea), drummer Ton 'Shell' Schellekens (In Crowd, Big Wheel), Ulli Grün (Boots, After Tea), and the young guitar virtuoso Frank van der Kloot (Bobby's Children and soon to play on the new Barry Hay album, 'Only Parrots, Frogs And Angels').Twenty five years ago, it was Harrie Knipschild, Holland's best-known blues expert, who started penning his praise for the band Drama in the Veronica Television Magazine.

Drama started after splitting of the band After Tea (trio: Ulli, Shell and myself). We needed a new challenge, and with the addition of guitarist Frank van der Kloot we grew into a band with, what's the word, balls.Record companies quickly became interested and we were even given studio time without even having written anything. We used the studio to write and rehearse, and because we all had the same blood group, we all knew that it would only be a matter of time before the material came rolling out. Now, on the 23rd of July 1997, with the help of a dog-eared scrapbook and a somewhat scanty memory, I'm trying to write a foreword for the soon to be appearing Drama CD.

Initially I was pleased that this was happening, even though our friend and Drama producer Hans Van Oosterhout won't be able to enjoy it. Hans slipped peacefully into an eternal sleep on the 4th of May 1995, but I know he would have been proud that this was happening.Apart from the fact that Hans was also Supersister's producer, he was also responsible for a large part of the Drama sound. Phonogram had spent a lot of money on Drama by that time, and after the tiring creation of the album, a hit was most welcome.Koelewijn came, and Drama had themselves a hit which they subsequently refused to play live.It wasn't particularly a 'drama', but it was quite difficult trying to explain that to irate venue owners after our gigs. We were quite often involved in hassles after our shows, but never had any trouble with our real fans who had already bought the album anyway. Drama came and went quite quickly.

After Ulli had gone back to Germany and we'd once more become a trio, we no longer had a recording deal, and couldn't find much work.Quite good reasons to call it a day. I can't really think of anything else to say at the moment except that this should have been a double CD with one 'studio' disc and one 'live' disc to give you a good picture of what Drama were really about.Because live, without leaving a trace of modesty, we were something else (Polle Eduard).

Ellis Mário - Quitanda do Brasil (2000)

Alpha Centauri - Alpha Centauri (1977)

Alpha Centauri were hatched in Greely, Colorado in 1971. The trio consisted of Jess Redmon (vocals, keyboards), Kurt Smith (vocals, guitar) and Randy Thompson (drums) and for four years, the band labored the Colorado club circuit to great local success. In 1975, Garth Hannum (vocals, bass) was brought into the fold, fleshing out the band's sound. Shortly after expanding the lineup, the band packed up and moved to Canada in hopes of reaching a more diverse audience, which ultimately landed them a contract with Salt Records in 1976. Over the next few months, the band worked meticulously in the studio until their self-titled debut hit the streets in early 1977. Canadian audiences took notice of the quartet and soon the band were the subject of a CBC television special.

For the next two years, the band enjoyed success in their new home and anticipated their next album. Sadly, by 1979 things were changing in the music scene at large. Punk and New Wave were stirring things up and Alpha Centauri struggled to keep and expand their core audience. It wasn't until 1983 that the band finally concluded that their time had come and gone, prompting them to split that summer. Redmon went on to work with Chad Allen as well as working in production, eventually forming a band bearing his namesake. He continues performing with them in Greely to this day. Thompson and Smith also returned home, gigging with local band, Eyez. Hannum's post breakup activities are unknown.

Alpha Centauri have often been referred to as the 'World's Best Undiscovered Pomp Band', prompting collector's to doggedly serach for copies of this unsung gem. So is the claim accurate? Well, maybe not completely, but there's no denying the band's talent or the quality of their sole release. With a tip of the hat to Uriah Heep, the band plays with conviction throughout, but points must be docked for their somewhat derivative sound. Complete with Byronesque vocals and slide guitars that evoke Mick Box, it's impossible not to notice the Uriah Heep similarities. "Love Is a Curse" is perhaps the most obvious reference point, with riffing and rhythms that come straight from "Wonderworld" era Heep. In spite of the lack of originality, the album pulses with precision from start to finish and is worthy of review. Subsequent listens may only be optional to those who don't mind hearing something derivative.

Whatever your tastes, a legendary album like this deserves to be heard and since the reissue has long gone out of print, I'm posting it here for your approval. Listen and learn about this often discussed act from Colorado!

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes (2008)

Depois fazer alguns shows , o grupo chamou a atenção do produtor Phil Ek (produtor do Built to Spill,The Shins, Modest Mouse). Thundermug - Discografia

Bread - Guitar Man (1972)

O primeiro single da banda, "Make It With You", alcançou o primeiro lugar da parada norte-americana da
O soft-rock de fácil assimilação conquistou as paradas norte-americanas, com destaque para "If", "Everything I Own", "Baby I'm-A Want You", "Guitar Man", "infringement" e "Aubrey".
1973.
Três anos mais tarde, reencontraram-se para lançarem um último trabalho, "Lost Without Your Love", também bem recebido pela crítica e público.
